International Day of Acceptance

This is such an interesting concept because so many of us think that acceptance means an automatic belief in, agreement with, understanding and condoning of something or someone. It doesn’t.

It is the action of consenting to receive or undertake something offered or given, whether that be a person, situation, concept or action. It is our assent to the reality of a situation, recognizing a process or condition whether it be positive or negative, comfortable, or not, that is a fait accompli without trying to change or argue it. It means to accept what is, simply because it has already happened, leaving no option but accept it as is.

The reason acceptance is an important skill to practice is that without it we find it difficult to find solutions to challenges. Without full acceptance of a difficulty first, we have no full understanding of it, and without full understanding we cannot make the best decisions to solve it, grow in self-awareness and move forward again in the best way possible for all concerned.

We navigate life’s daily challenges best by finding solutions based in our understanding of the obstacles. That’s not possible if we are in denial or wasting time arguing about the obstacles’ existence.

The next time someone shows you who they are for example, believe them. It doesn’t matter whether it’s in a positive or negative light because either way it will stand you in good stead when deciding where to position them in relationship to you. Don’t waste time arguing the facts and avoid being deluded or denying who or what they are showing to you. Acceptance is liberating. It also saves your precious energy.
